DUBLIN: Three people were arrested after protesters threw eggs and shoes at former British Prime Minister Tony Blair when he arrived to sign copies of his memoir at a bookshop in Dublin on Saturday, national broadcaster RTE said.

No injuries were reported and the missiles did not hit Blair.

Some of the 200 activists who had gathered outside Eason, a bookstore on Dublin's main thoroughfare O'Connell street, clashed with police over a security barrier.

Security at Blair's first signing of his autobiography had been tight due to opposition by an Irish nationalist group opposed to British control of Northern Ireland and by critics of Blair's decision to join the war in Iraq.

Readers were not allowed to take photos or ask Blair to write any personal messages in the copies of his self penned volume "A Journey", which describes what he called the "nightmare" that unfolded after the invasion of Iraq.

On RTE's "Late Late Show" on Friday, Blair said he stood by his decision on Iraq, adding that the military option should also not be ruled out to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

"I still think this incidentally today that we have this fundamentalist, extremist threat that is based on the perversion of the religion of Islam but it's still there and we have to deal with it," Blair said.

Blair, who converted to Catholicism after quitting Downing Street and whose maternal grandparents were Protestant farmers in Ireland, played a central role in striking a peace deal in Northern Ireland in 1998. AGENCIES

Google has agreed to pay 8.5 million dollars (US) to settle a privacy lawsuit over a Buzz social networking tool added to free email service Gmail in February, according to court documents. Legal paperwork made available online Friday detailed the proposed settlement, which awaits approval by the federal court judge in San Francisco presiding over the case.
Lawyers that filed the class-action suit staked out 30 percent of the settlement money and the seven named plaintiffs were to get no more than 2,500 dollars each, according to court documents.
The rest of the money, which Google is to deposit in a fund, was earmarked for organizations devoted to Internet privacy policy or education.
The settlement also called on the California-based Internet giant to do more to educate people about privacy at Buzz.
Facing a slew of privacy complaints in the wake of the Buzz launch, Google has made changes to the new social networking tool.
"Google has made changes to the Google Buzz user interface that clarify Google Buzz's operation and users' options regarding Google Buzz," the settlement maintained.
Among the concerns aired in technology blogs and elsewhere was that Google Buzz was taking a user's Gmail contacts and automatically adding them to their public Buzz social network.
Gmail users now have to create a Google Buzz public profile and can view, edit or hide lists of people in their online circles.
Google also gave users the ability to block anyone following their account.
Buzz allows Gmail users to get updates about what friends are doing online and offers ways to share video, photos and other digitized snippets.
Buzz has been described by some technology analysts as a direct challenge by Google to social networking stars Facebook and Twitter.
The court filing came as Google updated its privacy policy.
"We're simplifying and updating Google's privacy policies," Google associate general counsel Mike Yang said Friday in a blog post.
"To be clear, we aren't changing any of our privacy practices; we want to make our policies more transparent and understandable."
On Thursday, a nonprofit consumer group that has been hounding Google about privacy released a satirical video cartoon featuring the Internet firm's chief giving away ice cream to snoop on children.
Google noted that information about its privacy tools can be found online at google.com/privacy.

LOS ANGELES: Queen of Pop Madonna's teenage daughter Lourdes will make her big screen debut in her mother's much hyped directorial venture W.E.



The 13-year-old, billed as Lola Leon in the film credits, was spotted on the set shooting in a school uniform, according to reports.



It's not known yet exactly what part she's playing and how big her role will be.



Before she changed into her costume, Lourdes had joined her mother on the shoot with brothers Rocco and David to see what progress was being made yesterday.



Madonna was shooting in Mayfair outside hotel Claridges, as well as outside a makeshift Downing Street located in Aldwych.



W.E, Madonna's second film as a director, tells the story of Edward VIII's relationship with Wallis Simpson.



The $30 million film, currently being shot in Britain and France, intersperses Edward's affair with the American divorcee with a love story set in 1998.

Google released an improved version of Chrome on Thursday as the Internet titan's Web browser turned two years old. "Looking back today on Chrome's second anniversary, it's amazing to see how much has changed in just a short time," Google product manager Brian Rakowski said in a blog post.
"All browsers have come a long way in the last two years and the Web has become much more fun and useful."
Web browsers are software programs that people use to access and navigate the vast sea of data on the Internet.
Google simplified the Chrome interface and made the color scheme "easier on the eyes" while making it faster and enhancing safety features such as warnings about websites that might be booby-trapped by hackers, according to Rakowski.

TAUNTON: Pakistan's first match since a betting scandal engulfed the team on their tour of England ended with them having just 11 fit players at their disposal on Thursday.

Pakistan won a one-day tour game against southwest county Somerset by eight runs in the last over in their final match before Twenty20 and one-day series against England.

But the fixture itself was overshadowed by the announcement that Test captain Salman Butt and pace bowlers Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif had withdrawn from the remainder of the tour after being named in a fixing 'sting'.

Britain's News of the World newspaper had alleged on Sunday the trio had all conspired with a 'fixer' to deliberately bowl no-balls during the fourth Test against England at Lord's last week.

Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal was hit in the face batting in the nets at Somerset's County Ground before play started on Thursday and missed the warm-up match entirely while all-rounder Abdul Razzaq suffered a back problem warming-up between innings and was unable to bowl.

Shafqat Rana, Pakistan's associate manager, told reporters Razzaq's condition was being assessed.

Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed, speaking before play started, said he expected Umar Akmal to be fit for the remainder of the tour.

Saeed added replacements would be called up to take the squad back to its original 16-man size but said he did not know who the new players would be.

Butt, Asif and Aamer all pulled out from the tour after a meeting with Pakistan's High Commissioner (ambassador) Wajid Shamsul Hasan and Ijaz Butt, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board in London on Thursday.

A statement released on their behalf said they were in no state to play cricket because of the "mental torture" they'd suffered in recent days.

Their withdrawal effectively paved the way for the rest of the tour to continue as scheduled.

"If they do something bad, you need to give them a punishment, but we are still waiting for the result and I'm praying that what happens is good for the team," said Pakistan one-day captain Shahid Afridi at the toss.

In the match itself, Pakistan made 264 all out after being sent into bat.

Shazaib Hasan top-scored for Pakistan with 105, off 120 balls with two sixes and 10 fours, while Fawad Alam made 97.

The pair put on 169 runs in 31 overs for the fourth wicket.

Debutant medium-pace bowler Lewis Gregory led Somerset's attack with four wickets for 49 runs.

Somerset finished on 256 for nine with South African Zander de Bruyn unbeaten on 122.

Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal took three for 40 and paceman Umar Gul three for 66.

The match passed of without incident and a collection amongst the crowd of 4,000, who acknowledged all the tourists' good play with traditional polite applause, raised 2,580 pounds (3,971 dollars) for the Pakistan flood-relief fund.

Somerset chief executive Richard Gould told reporters the club would round that figure up to 5,000 pounds (7,696 dollars).

Pakistan play the first of two Twenty20 internationals against England, both in Cardiff, on Sunday.
